Shin splints syndrome is caused by overuse or a repetitive load injury of the shin area. It’s manifested on the anterior surface of the tibia.
The condition occurs after a tibia fracture or an inflammation of the muscles and the periosteum (bone skin) of the tibia.
It usually happens either to people who have too much standing, or to athletes who are poorly trained, running on hard, uneven, concrete ground and wearing improper athletic shoes, or to teen athletes who grow tall quickly.
It also happens to non-athletes, in cases of ankle and foot fatigue (walking on uneven ground, long-standing, mountaineering, mountain hunting, etc.).
Symptoms that can be observed in the tibial periostitis are pain in the anterior surface of the tibia, the presence of inflammation, redness, local temperature rise and frequent fatigue after everyday activities.
